Head of Research Unit:

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Wolfgang Buchberger, M.D., MSc.

Mission Statement:

The Research Unit of Quality and Efficiency in Medicine (RUQEM) aims at providing new imputs for high-quality and efficient healthcare at the interface between medicine, economics and health sciences. The focus is on patient-oriented processes, whereby special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity and interprofessionality.

The teaching and research area of the Research Unit include the following topics, which are worked on as closely as possible in collaboration with other disciplines represented at the UMIT:

  • Quality and risk management at organisational and system level (including clinical governance and quality of care, clinical risk management and patient safety);
  • Strategic management of healthcare facilities (including process management, organisational analysis and development, and change management);
  • Planning and scientific monitoring of preventive medical measures and programs;
  • Cost-benefit and benefit-risk analysis of medical and public health interventions;
  • Evaluation of existing and development of new healthcare structures and processes for the inpatient and outpatient care sector (health services research)
  • Development and evaluation of new job profiles and fields of activity in the medical professions.

In order to ensure a high level of practical relevance in teaching and research, in addition to the interdisciplinary cooperation within the university, a project-related cooperation with various system partners in the healthcare sector, such as hospital providers, other health care providers or companies in the healthcare industry, is sought.
